Georgia Cities Foundation
George is honored to be on the board of the Georgia Cities Foundation (link to www.georgiacitiesfoundation.org). Since the inception of its downtown loan program in 2002, the Georgia Cities Foundation has provided 67 loans totalling almost $12 million for downtown projects in 37 cities in Georgia. The projects we have invested in have spurred more than $66 million in additional private investment and have generated the following impacts:
- 189 new businesses downtown;
- 964 new jobs downtown;
- 136 downtown housing units;
- 796,960 square feet of rehabilitated floor area; and
- 109,728 square feet of new construction.
During 2010, the Foundation unveiled its new loan program, the Green Communities Fund, which provides energy audits and low interest loans for energy efficient improvements in downtown buildings. Additionally, earlier this month, the Foundation learned that it would receive designation as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) from the US Treasury Department’s CDFI Fund.
As we move forward in 2011, we will continue to seek funding for the downtown Revolving Loan Fund and the Green Communities Fund programs so that the Foundation can continue to carry out its mission by serving as a catalyst for downtown development.
